Gino
Inside the GinoCarl salon

GinoCarl was established 1967 and has been cutting hair in Hendon's Vivian Avenue for 43 years. The company started life way back in June 1967 across the road from our current position and we were then called Bernard & Gino. Italian born Gino, who learnt his trade in Italy, began working in a salon in Golders Green alongside Bernard, who later became his partner when they opened their first salon in Vivian Avenue, Hendon Central in 1967. A second branch opened in North End Road, Golders Green in 1973. The partnership lasted 16 years until 1983 when the partners went their separate ways, Bernard kept the Golders Green salon and Gino kept the Hendon salon.

It was at this time that Carl, Gino's son, became a partner in the Hendon business which changed its name to Gino & Son. Carl began his hairdressing career in 1978, at the age of 14, shampooing and sweeping up. In 1981 he started a two-year college course in hairdressing at the London College of Fashion and upon completion started working full time with Bernard & Gino. In April 1991 an opportunity to move to a better site across the road in Vivian Avenue, Hendon presented itself and father and son moved premises to our current stylish salon. The company changed image and name to our current name, GinoCarl.

Tragically, on May 1st 2005, Gino passed away after an unsuccessful liver transplant operation. He is sadly missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the Salon, now run by Carl and aided by the ever present Paolo. Amazingly we still retain many clients from the days of Bernard & Gino despite the fact that many have moved right out of the area.

Bernard recently sold his salon and has gone full circle and now works part time for GinoCarl back in Vivian Avenue.

We may have moved on a bit from the olden days, with satellite TV, air conditioning, little luxuries like up to the minute magazines and fresh coffee, including Espresso - when the boys have time to make it, but the old fashioned formula of good service and great haircuts still applies.
